My Earthseed Community

Two real-life issues that make it necessary for me to create my Earthseed community are the ongoing ICE raids and systemic racism here in Los Angeles. ICE raids have established significant fear and instability to all undocumented people and families in Los Angeles, separating them and forcing many to hide in their homes. Racism is another major issue that limits access to opportunities, safety, and fair treatment. My Earthseed community is meant to protect everyone who is vulnerable and to integrate a place where people can live peacefully without being targeted for their race, color, and legal status. The quote from Parable of the Sower that states “All that you touch, You Change, All that you Change, Changes You, The only lasting truth, is Change. God is Change”, will apply to my community because I want to embrace change instead of having them fear it, because we are in a world where laws, policies, and social conditions change constantly. Another verse I would implement into my community would be “Belief initiates and guides action—or does nothing, drowning people sometimes die Fighting their rescuers, There is no end to what a living world will demand of you. The Destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars.” This in my community means that they will not only survive but that I will try to build a better future even if there aren’t major changes at the beginning, teaching them that we must stick together and take it one step at a time or we will drown fighting our rescuers if we don’t support one another; they must have faith. Anyone who is willing to be respectful, contribute and support my goal of establishing safety and equality can join the community. Undocumented individuals and allies who are willing to protect one another and are not racist among each other can join. Those who are violent, discriminate against others, and betray will not be able to join my community because we will be able to trust one another to survive and they would not meet the criteria.

Moreover, the leadership model for my community will be collaborative and community-based. Some members will help make decisions for the community, but everyone will be able to contribute to important choices. Leadership will concentrate on protecting the community, adapt to changes, and to make sure equality exists instead of trying to have accountability over others. A future technology that will improve life in my community would be secure, encrypted communication networks where people can avoid being under surveillance. Although these systems already exist today, I will expand them to protect communities in occasions where raids occur and someone is experiencing racism. In order to survive, the Earthseed community must rely on mutual aid, shared housing, and resource pooling. The members will support one another by sharing food, information, and future plans to create a strong support system where no one is left out and instead grow together. To create a better future, the community will focus on education and improve housing conditions. Education is important because it will grant them legal rights and critical life skills. Improved housing conditions will create safe neighborhoods for everyone, where racism and raids will not exist. Together, these important steps will help the community not just to survive, but to grow and succeed.
