After learning about Afrofuturism and how it examines real life issues with creativity, I realized that I could go on and on and never get tired of watching films, reading, etc. Afrofuturism and Professor Due have taught me that what may be seen as a fake scenario is a reflection of today’s society. The most significant piece of work we discussed this quarter that stood out to me was Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. Parable of the Sower demonstrates how the Afrofuturistic scene it is set in is set in 2026, and it is entirely relevant to all contemporary issues we see today. Even though Parable of the Sower was written in 1993, it takes place in the 2020s in California, and is a reflection of the issues that we have been living in especially during Trump’s second term in office. In the book, Butler explores how people survive and battle with crisis and uncertainty. Lauren, the main character, lives in a world full of poverty, crime, and instability and has a belief that “God is Change”, emphasizing that change is inevitable, and that in order to survive you must adapt. Lauren is very independent and doesn’t rely on anyone to make a change in her community but herself so she decides to create an Earthseed, a philosophy that pushes for people to shape their future. This is one of the most important and impactful things from the books because it emphasizes how important it is to have personal responsibility, community relationships, and hope even if things are difficult.
Another important part of the book is how important building a community is for Lauren. Throughout her journey of the Earthseed community, she builds a diverse group of people who support and protect one another. Being able to do such a thing in a society that has fallen apart is important as Butler illustrates how cooperation and trust are needed to survive. The main message here is that no one can survive major challenges alone, again, being a reflection of those who face uncertainty here in the U.S. regarding economical, environmental, and political issues. Therefore, this novel is one of my biggest takeaways this quarter because it isn’t just a science fiction novel, but a warning about the consequences we face if we ignore social issues. The message by Butler is an example of hope regarding resilience, community, and the ability of people to come together and create a better future even during difficulties.
